Video: No waves, 22 knots of wind, 20 knots of boatspeed downwind

Posted on 04 October 2010 by Valencia Sailing

As we said earlier today, Monday was just a perfect day in Valencia for the TP52′s that took advantage of the excellent conditions to carry out their last training session before the serious racing on Tuesday. Our friend, Spanish photographer Jesús Renedo, was onboard Portugal’s Bigamist 7 and sent us this video. No waves, 22 knots of wind, 20 knots of boatspeed downwind. Who can ask for anything more?

First test sail for TP52 Bigamist in Cascais in brisk conditions

Posted on 01 March 2010 by Valencia Sailing

The newly-modified TP52 Bigamist had her first test sail yesterday in Cascais. The crew of the Portuguese team, skippered by Afonso Domingos, sailed their TP52 for the first time after being adapted to the new class rule. As the photos clearly show, the 3-hour shakedown sail took place under brisk conditions, with a northeasterly breeze that reached 25 knots, big waves as well as rain for most of the time.

This was the first time the crew experienced the modified yacht and everything went smooth, except for a minor problem that Domingos detected on the rudder. With Domingos flying to Miami to join the Bacardi Cup, the shore crew will repair the problem as well as apply all recommendations by the sailing team in the next two weeks in order to start training in full earnest from March 20th.

The Portuguese will have the home advantage in the opening event of this year’s AUDI Medcup season, since their waters will host the Cascais Portugal Trophy from May 11th to 16th.

TP52 Bigamist leaves Valencia, heads to Cascais

Posted on 02 February 2010 by Valencia Sailing

As I’ve said before, sailing in Valencia is not just about the America’s Cup. With exactly 3 months left until the start of the 2010 AUDI Medcup more than two thirds of the TP52 boats call Valencia their home. They are here undergoing modifications in order to meet the new class rules.

The first of the “Valencia” TP52′s to have hit the water was Pedro Mendoça’s Bigamist 7. She was launched just yesterday, sporting a bowsprit, dual backstays and an additional 150kg in the bulb, and she is currently on her way to Cascais, her home and venue of the first AUDI Medcup event this year.

When we visited the Victory Challenge base on Tuesday afternoon, the Portuguese shore crew was making the final preparations before starting the 800-mile trip to Portugal. According to the latest forecasts, there is a very positive 8-day weather window over the Iberian peninsula and as a result, the Portuguese crew didn’t want to miss it.

What is it? It’s the modified TP52 Bigamist

Posted on 01 February 2010 by Valencia Sailing

It’s not related to the 33rd America’s Cup but it’s the answer to yesterday’s quiz. The yacht in question was the newly-modified TP52 Bigamist. She is now fully masted in front of the Victory Challenge base and to the best of my knowledge she is the first unit of the TP52 fleet to have been modified to the 2010-2011 rule. We will have a full report on the Portuguese boat as soon as the giant multihulls across Port America’s Cup give us the permission.
