[Source: Team SCA] As Team SCA continues their quest to establish a female offshore racing crew, an additional four candidates will arrive at the team’s base in Puerto Calero, Lanzarote, later this week.
Tamara Echegoyen (ESP), Natalia Via-Dufresne (ESP), Annemeike Bes (NED) and Anna-Lena Elled (SWE) will join the team’s coaches in Lanzarote to be put through their paces in an intensive 10-day selection program.
“Our intention has always been to try and put together the best female offshore racing crew. We have been very impressed with the caliber of candidates so far and I am sure that these new additions will be equally impressive,” comments Brad Jackson, Team SCA Coach.
With this new group some seventeen women have now been through the Team SCA training program, that has included tests of sailing and physical ability, as well as medicals.
“We are, of course, looking at each candidate’s sailing skill, but we are also looking at their ability to work as part of a team. As coaches we are more than aware that this race can at times be very demanding – both physically and mentally – so it is important that the crew is able to deal with this in a team environment,” concludes Jackson.
It is anticipated that the first crew members will be confirmed in the near future. However, Team SCA is continuing their search for potential candidates and the full team will be announced later this year.
